About Alpine

Located in San Diego’s East County, Alpine is a community in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains. It is bordered by Lakeside to the west and is the gateway to San Diego County’s mountains, forests, and deserts to the east. With easy access to Route 8, Alpine is 15 minutes from El Cajon and 30 minutes from downtown San Diego and the beach.

This quaint town offers residents a small-town country atmosphere with community traditions. The Spring Art and Music Festival is held each April, with live music, arts and crafts, food, and a beer garden. The annual Fourth of July parade and festival features festive floats and lots of fun activities. In December, the Alpine Village Parade of Lights and Snow Festival is held on the first Friday of the month.

Spend an afternoon at the Children’s Nature Retreat, a 20-acre ranch that is home to more than 80 domesticated animals from around the world. Feed and interact with camels, Nigerian goats, mules, alpacas, and zebras. Alpine is also home to Lions, Tigers, & Bears, an animal rescue, sanctuary, and educational facility, on 93 acres at the edge of the Cleveland National Forest. Get out the fishing rod and head to Loveland Reservoir to fish for bass, Channel catfish, bluegill, carp, or red ear sunfish.
Alpine offers a variety of shopping along Alpine Avenue, the main thoroughfare, with such stores as Rite-Aid, CVS, Baron’s Market, Albertson’s, Ace Hardware, and Dollar Tree. Restaurants in the area include Alpine Tavern and Grill, Donato’s Italian restaurant, Janet’s Montana Café, Al Pancho’s Mexican restaurant, Mediterraneo’s Italian restaurant, and Alpine Beer Company Pub. The Viejas Casino and Resort, only four miles away, features a variety of restaurants, including The Buffet. Entertainment includes concerts by well-known performers, a Fourth of July celebration with a grand fireworks display, trick or treating on Halloween, and a visit from Santa Claus during the Christmas season.

Alpine School District has two traditional elementary schools for students in grades 1-5 — Boulder Oaks Elementary and Shadow Hills Elementary has a Spanish Immersion program. Mountain View Learning Academy offers students a personalized educational program. Kindergarten students attend Creekside Early Learning Center. Students in grades 6-8 attend Joan McQueen Middle School. The Alpine School District is currently planning on creating a high school on the site of Alpine Elementary.

Alpine offers a friendly, laid-back small town with a country feel that is close to all Southern California has to offer.
