A thing of value is something useful, something precious, something important and worthwhile. That is what we bring with us to the workplace – it is the commodity we trade in. Value takes time but what we get paid for is value and not time. Value is what keeps people coming back for more.
As a verb, to value is to assess, to estimate, to regard, to appreciate, to treasure, to respect. It involves having something that people want and need. It involves leaving a place better than we arrived.
One definition of value involves ethics. Our moral code and standard of doing business…our values will bring strength to our clients and colleagues. Value is what has made American what it is today—the greatest nation on the face of the earth. Whole industries across the globe are judged by how America does things. Value got us here and value is what will keep us on top.
That’s quite a goal, isn’t it? Let’s keep America great. But the reality of the challenge begins with the heart of the individual, rising and renewing our personal commitment to bringing value. The declaration that we will go farther, see things bigger, and serve others regardless of how we feel will bring rich rewards. Doing things because they are right involves value.
There is an anonymous poem, called One Man Awake that captures the essence of what can happen when someone makes the decision.
One Man AwakeOne man awake awakens another The second awakens his next-door neighbor And three awake can rouse the town, And turn the whole place upside down. And many awake can raise such a fuss That it finally awakens the rest of us. One man up with dawn in his eyes, multiplies. Photo Courtesy of Marketingblog.edu
