East County Origins
In February 16, 1912, the city of La Mesa became the thirty-sixth district in the state of California. Founders of this fair town were cattle and sheep ranchers and silent movie moguls. Yes, La Mesa was one of the pioneering centers for film. Lush hills covered with historic homes, craftsman bungalows, and enthusiastic community spirit makes La Mesa arguably one of the most interesting areas in San Diego County. Read more about local history on the La Mesa Historical Society website.
Drive up University Boulevard to La Mesa Boulevard and you will see a wide array of businesses, great restaurants, shops and a thriving senior center. The senior center offers art classes, a creative writing course, and other community enrichment programs. There are consignment stores, coffee shops, bookstores, and there is a train museum on Spring Street along side the San Diego Trolley, which runs through town.
