Last Wednesday, HGTV headlined some photo galleries on their website on color entitled: Don’t love it? Paint it.

Of course, they have such brilliant contributors. I love their work, and it got me thinking about what I would tell you if you asked for help on choosing a paint color.

So lets start a little series

Week One: we’re going to look at the personal nature of color.

Week Two: we are going to look at how to choose colors that please.

Week Three: we are going to look at how to apply a palette of color for the greatest longevity in your room.

Week One

Paint is an amazing design tool. It can dramatically change a space at relatively low cost. People often don’t use it though because they have not broken the code on HOW.

People have the erroneous idea that because they might want to sell my home in the next thirty years, they better leave the walls white. Neutral colors it is said, appeal to the widest range of people, but I think if we all just knew a little more about how to choose color, we would be a touch more daring.

Recently, I saw a model home styled with bright orange in every room. It was vibrant but did not overpower because the designer balanced the rest of the palette in each space. I would have no problem living in that home.

Sit down with your spouse and look at a color wheel. Ask them to pick their top three colors. Now you do the same. Now have your children do it. You will see that tastes run the gamut. They also change over time.

My husband likes saturated colors. He likes colors you find in an LL Bean Catalog on the tee shirts page.I on the other hand gravitate toward both summer and autumn colors: latte, olive, brown, but throw in some chambray blue.

Color like smell have an association…

Sometimes perfectly good colors leave us feeling blah, not because the color is blah but because they associate with a blah time in our lives. Color can transport us through time back to things in our past. That is why any good designer chooses colors with the input of the people who will be living in that space.

Colors can give energy – like orange, yellow, red.

Colors can soothe – like blue, green.

Notably, visual artists often like their homes painted white. It provides rest from the fatigue of too much color stimulation. Or maybe color just reminds them of work and it is easier to relax in the absence of it.  Anyway, color is a fascinating topic. It can bring interest to a space for not a lot of money.

Next we will look at how to pick a palette to please the whole family. Check out the next Home Decor post here.
