Did you know…

The tradition of dyeing the Chicago River green began in 1962 when city workers realized it would be a unique way to celebrate the holiday. Each year on St. Patrick’s Day, they release about 40 pounds of green vegetable dye into the river — enough to keep it green for a few hours. Many Chicagoans claim their idea for a green river on St. Patrick’s Day was the first. However, in 1961, the residents of Savannah, Georgia sought to dye their river green, but the experiment failed due to rough waters on March 17.

In 1995, Congress proclaimed March as Irish-American Heritage Month. According to the latest data, 34.5 million U.S. residents claim Irish ancestry. That’s more than seven times the population of Ireland itself (4.68 million). Happy St. Patty’s Day!
