East Village District of Downtown San Diego
Downtown San Diego’s largest and fastest growing neighborhood is the East Village District. It’s hip and vibrant and close to San Diego’s Big Bay.
Sophistication and Variety
This is one of the biggest districts downtown. It also has the most housing. It feels a lot like New York City in that you move to a neighborhood then you get to know the locals and become regulars in your nearby hangout. It has a mom and pop feel to it.
New Projects Under Development
Homes ranging from lofts, to studios, with nearby galleries and shops can be found here. At one time a warehouse district, East Village is comprised of charming urban residences and offices in an exciting setting.
As it continues to develop , the East Village will maintain it’s big city vibe. Some of the great features in East Village are PETCO Park; the new Central Library (currently under construction); San Diego City College, the New School of Architecture, and Thomas Jefferson School of Law; and great shopping in and around the district.
Recent Home Construction
One of the high rises currently under construction is 15th and Commercial. This structure will have 65 units of affordable apartments. Another, Ten Fifty B Street, a condominium high rise, has 23 stories consisting of 229 units.
Area Development
Construction on a new 57,000 square foot public park located at 14th Street and Island Avenue began at the end of 2011. The park will feature open lawn space, a children’s playground, and a cafe with public rest rooms directly adjacent to the park. Additional parks are planned throughout East Village in the future.
Central Library
New Central Public Library is going to be a real showpiece. Already under construction, it will be both a library and events center.
Neighborhood Dining
Local eating establishments include Smashburger, Lotus Thai Cuisine, The Kebab Shop, J Wok and Village at 631.
