Located in San Diego’s East County, Rancho San Diego is a community in the city of El Cajon. Bordered by El Cajon, Spring Valley, and Jamul, Rancho San Diego has easy access to Routes 94, 125, and 8. It is 20 minutes from downtown San Diego and 30 minutes from the beach.
On a sunny afternoon, cross the steel-truss Sweetwater River Bridge, built in 1929, and hike the Sweetwater River trail. An easy hike, this 2.3-mile trail runs along the northwestern edge of the San Diego National Wildlife Refuge. Or visit the Damon Lane County Park at the end of Calle de Abara. This 29-acre park features eucalyptus groves that tower above a creek that is viable year-round. From the highest point of the trail at 738 feet, one can see a panoramic view of several mountains, including Viejas Mountain, El Cajon Mountain, and San Miguel Mountain.
Rancho San Diego offers a variety of shopping along Jamacha Road, the main thoroughfare, with such stores as Target, Kohl’s, Michael’s, Ross, Petco, Ralph’s, Vons, and Albertson’s, as well as an Edwards theater, with stadium seating in its 15 theaters. Restaurants in the area include Di Leones Italian Restaurant, Luna Grill, Hooley’s Irish Pub, Nicky Rottens Bar & Burger Joint, Applebees, and TGI Fridays.
Rancho San Diego is part of the Cajon Valley Union School District. Elementary schools in the area include Rancho San Diego Elementary and Vista Grande Elementary. Middle and high schools include Hillsdale Middle School, Steele Canyon High, and Valhalla High School. Cuyamaca College is in the center of this suburban community. It features the Water Conservation Garden, which began in the early 1990s to help the public save on water for their landscaping. It provides the public with ideas for ground covers, water-wise plants, or decorative hardscapes. The Heritage of the Americas Museum, located at the west entrance of Cuyamaca College, features prehistoric artifacts and specimens and historic art and culture of the Americas. It has four major wings—Natural History, Archaeology, Anthropology, and Fine Art, as well as tropical and desert garden patios.
Rancho San Diego offers a laid-back suburban community with a country feel that is close to all Southern California has to offer.
