A Golden Opportunity-12741 Laurel St., #45
A man hands a slice of bread to his granddaughter. The little girl squeals with joy as she tosses a piece to the ducks and geese rushing up from the shoreline of Lindo Lake in Lakeside. Adults gather around a picnic table decorated with pink balloons and streamers and chat as their children jump gleefully in a bouncy house. Across the lake, teenagers race up banked walls and around bowls at the skateboard park. Men cast their fishing lines into the cobalt blue water as people walk their dogs along the 1.4 mile trail that loops around the lake.
Lakeside, a community in the foothills of the Cuyamaca Mountains, is located on the San Diego River about 21 miles east of downtown San Diego. It is home to approximately 56,000 residents. With almost 85 percent of its area undeveloped, it has many farms and ranches, and it’s not uncommon to see peacocks strutting along the side of the road, or pass people on horseback. The host of the second largest Western Parade, Lakeside has the most equestrians in California. The local high school, El Capitan, offers the only agricultural program in the county, and the community has a very active 4H club.
For a real Western feel, attend the annual rodeo at the Rodeo Stadium, complete with roping, bronco riding, and barrel racing. Hike the trails around nearby Lake Jennings, or camp at its campgrounds. The views of the lake and surrounding mountains are spectacular. Spend a day picnicking along its shores, or cruise in a rented boat and explore the lake’s hidden coves.
Lakeside makes a great town for those who want easy access to a major city but enjoy living a rural lifestyle. It’s a place many residents never want to leave.
